Mesothelioma is a deadly type of cancer caused by exposure to a mineral fiber called asbestos, which was once commonly used for many purposes, such as shipbuilding or concrete manufacturing. Mesothelioma affects the mesothelium, a lining which covers the lungs, chest cavity, and internal organs. When cancer occurs in the mesothelium—that is, when the mesothelium cells start dividing uncontrollably—mesothelioma has developed.
Mesothelioma is notorious for its long latency period. This means that mesothelioma symptoms may not begin to show up until 30 or more years after someone is exposed to asbestos.
Mesothelioma Treatment
Diagnosing and treating mesothelioma are tricky processes. Many mesothelioma symptoms are nonspecific, including:
- Chest pain
- Tiredness
- Coughing
- Shortness of breath

Mesothelioma Treatment is also difficult. As with most types of cancer, surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy are major options, though their effectiveness varies from patient to patient. Though experiment therapies are constantly being researched, no definitive solution has been found. Unfortunately, mesothelioma is a very dangerous cancer – especially because it often goes unnoticed until it is already fairly advanced. According to studies, five-year survival rates for mesothelioma patients are estimated at less than 30-50%.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Even though the root cause of it had been discovered years ago, there hasn’t been much successful progress about treating it. If discovered at an early stage, the treatment of malignant mesothelioma is possible but in very rare cases.
The level of malignancy depends upon
different factors such as mesothelial surface of the oleural cavity
which helps local metastasis by exfoliating cells, invasion into the
tissue and other organs protected by the pleural cavity as well as the
latency period which can span several decades when it comes to asbestos
diseases. The patient’s general health also affects things greatly.
Surgery as an option for mesothelioma treatment
By itself, surgery has proved to be very disappointing when it comes to mesothelioma. The known survivor only survived for 11.7 months after the surgery. That being said, surgery can be succeful to greater degree if coupled with radiation and chemotherapy. In some cases, the lining of the chest is removed while in others, the lung, lining of the inside of the chest, the hemi-diaphragm and pericardium are removed.
Radiation Therapy
For patients who can tolerate radiation, it is given post-op as a treatment. The hemi-thorax is administered with radiation therapy often coupled with chemotherapy. This mix has helped improve life expectancy in a few patient populations.

However, it also
comes with its risks and side effects such asatal pneumonitis. To cure
mesothelioma, radiotherapy is commonly administered to the sites of
chest drain insertion, so as to prevent growth of the tumor in the chest
wall.
Chemotherapry in mesothelioma treatment
The only known treatment for mesothelioma is chemotherapy. It improves survival chances in randomized and controlled trials. The side effects included nausea and vomiting, stomatitis, and diarrhoea but these only affected a minority of patients, thus, combination of pemetrexed and cisplatin was successful when patients were given vitamin supplementation; both Overall health and lung functions tests improved.
In
February 2004, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved
pemetrexed. This was a big leap for treatment of malignant pleural
mesothelioma. That being said, the prescribed dosage and number of
cycles to administer have not been fully determined just yet.
Mesothelioma Trust Funds
In the early 1970's U.S. courts began to see a rise in the number of asbestos-related cases. In order to make the process go faster, a number of companies have banded together into loose organizations, wherein they each pay money into allocated trusts that are designed to pay victims of mesothelioma, asbestosis and other asbestos-related illnesses. Some companies have established trusts on their own.
Currently, more
than $30 billion sits in trust, available to those who have been
diagnosed with mesothelioma and other asbestos-caused illnesses. The
amount of money in these trusts is expected to rise over time, as more
and more cases of confirmed asbestos-related mesothelioma surface.
The
trusts have been ordered by the federal government as a result of these
companies filing Chapter 11 Bankruptcy and being restructured as to be
able to provide for mesothelioma victims, while still conducting
business. More than 60 companies fall into this category and more are
expected to follow suit in the future.
Those who
suffer from mesothelioma are aware of the huge medical expenses that
come with such a burden. The mesothelioma trust fund is a proven way to
compensate those diagnosed with this terrible illness.
Mesothelioma Claims
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you may be eligible for compensation from the mesothelioma trust fund to help cover medical bills, lost wages and other household expenses. Mesothelioma lawsuits are complicated, detailed matters that require the assistance of an experienced group of lawyers that understand the complex nature of these cases.
Mesothelioma Lawsuit
While the majority of mesothelioma cases are settled out of court, some victims are not satisfied with the proposed settlements by the trustees of the mesothelioma trust funds. In such an event, a lawsuit is filed and attorneys enter into litigation proceedings on behalf of the mesothelioma victim. Still, most cases are never actually heard in court, and end up being settled before trial. Experienced mesothelioma lawyers can make sure you get the best settlement for your case.
Mesothelioma Risk
The likelihood of developing mesothelioma varies from individual to individual. Some people develop it with only minimal exposure to asbestos, while for others a lot of exposure is needed. Shockingly, since the 1940s, millions of industrial workers have been exposed to asbestos. More recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set a limit as to how much asbestos people should be exposed to so that they do not develop mesothelioma.
